Niagara Falls, Ontario, faces one of the world's most famous waterfalls across the Niagara River from its namesake city in New York. The Horseshoe Falls, which curves along the Canadian side, carries most of the river's flow over its edge in a thundering wall of water and mist. Around it, a long riverside parkland coexists with a bustling tourist district of hotels and amusements.
The classic first view is from Table Rock, right at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, and Queen Victoria Park stretches along the river with gardens and lookouts. Journey Behind the Falls leads through tunnels to portals beside the falling water, and boat cruises carry passengers into the spray at the foot of the falls. For the overhead perspective, the Skylon Tower rises above the Fallsview area, connected to the riverside by the short Falls Incline Railway. Clifton Hill is the neon-lit strip of attractions and arcades. Downstream, the White Water Walk follows the rapids along the gorge, the Whirlpool Aero Car crosses high above a swirling whirlpool, and the Butterfly Conservatory sits within the Botanical Gardens.
Niagara Falls suits families, first-time visitors to Canada, and couples. Summer is busy and boat tours operate seasonally. Evening illuminations light the falls year-round, and winter brings a festival of lights.

The giant curved Horseshoe Falls, where most of the Niagara River plunges about 50 meters, seen at its closest from the Table Rock lookout right at the brink. Mist and rainbows are constant on sunny days. Come early in the morning or at night when the falls are lit in color.
Elevators take you down through the rock to tunnels and observation decks beside and behind the Horseshoe Falls, where you feel the thunder of the water. Ponchos are provided. Lines are long in summer afternoons, so book an early time slot online.
Boat tours from the Canadian side carry passengers in ponchos past the American Falls and deep into the mist at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. It is the most memorable way to feel the power of the water. Cruises run from spring to fall; expect to get wet.
Landscaped park running along the river opposite the American Falls, with flower beds, lawns and the best open views of both falls. It hosts winter light displays and summer fireworks over the falls. Stroll the riverside path between Clifton Hill and Table Rock.
Restored hydroelectric generating station from 1905 beside the falls, with giant generators, exhibits on early power and a tunnel that leads to a viewing platform at the river's edge. Evening light shows are held inside. Book the tunnel experience ahead in busy seasons.
Observation tower rising high above the falls with yellow exterior elevators, an indoor and outdoor viewing deck and a revolving dining room. On clear days you can see far across Lake Ontario. Visit near sunset for daylight views and then the illuminated falls.
Busy street of attractions leading down to the river, with wax museums, haunted houses, arcades, mini golf, restaurants and the Niagara SkyWheel. It is loud, bright and fun for families. Expect crowds and higher prices, especially on summer evenings.
Short funicular connecting the Fallsview hotel district on the escarpment with the Table Rock area beside the Horseshoe Falls. It saves a steep walk and offers a quick view on the way down. It runs most of the year; buy tickets at the station or use a day pass.
Boardwalk along the edge of the Great Gorge Rapids, reached by elevator, where the river rushes past in some of the wildest whitewater in North America. Informative panels explain the gorge. It is open in the warmer months; allow about an hour.
Historic cable car, first opened in 1916, that carries visitors high across the Niagara Whirlpool, where the river turns sharply in the gorge. Views straight down to the swirling water are dramatic. It runs seasonally and closes in bad weather.
Network of trails descending into the Niagara Gorge among giant boulders, old forest and the rushing river, starting from a small nature center on the parkway. It is one of the most scenic hikes in the region. Wear sturdy shoes, as the trails are rocky and steep.
Glass conservatory with thousands of tropical butterflies flying freely among plants, set in the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens along the parkway. The free gardens include a rose garden and formal beds. Wear bright colors and move slowly, as butterflies may land on you.
