About Detroit

Detroit is the largest city in Michigan, set on the Detroit River directly across from Windsor, Canada, one of the few places where Canada lies south of the United States. French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded a fort and trading post here in 1701, making Detroit one of the oldest cities in the Midwest. In the early 1900s Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers, General Motors and Chrysler turned it into the Motor City, the capital of the American auto industry, and its booming factories drew workers from across the country and the world.

The city has been through hard decades of decline, but today Detroit, with around 640,000 residents, is in the midst of a celebrated comeback. Downtown has been revived with restored art deco skyscrapers, new parks and lively restaurants, the QLine streetcar runs up Woodward Avenue, and the restored Michigan Central Station has reopened as a landmark and tech hub. Detroit's music history runs deep: Motown Records was born here in a small house on West Grand Boulevard, and the city also shaped jazz, gospel, techno and rock.

Visitors will find world-class culture. The Detroit Institute of Arts holds one of the finest collections in the country, including Diego Rivera's monumental Detroit Industry murals, and the Motown Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the nearby Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn tell powerful American stories. The Detroit RiverWalk and Belle Isle Park offer water views and green space, Eastern Market is one of the oldest public markets in the country, and the Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red Wings all play downtown.

Best seasonMay to October for the RiverWalk, festivals and baseball; winters are cold and snowy.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for downtown, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Motown Museum, Eastern Market, Belle Isle and The Henry Ford.
ArrivingDetroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is about 25 minutes from downtown, and the QLine streetcar runs along Woodward Avenue.
