Canton is a large township in western Wayne County, Michigan, about 25 miles west of Detroit and 20 miles east of Ann Arbor. Settled by farmers in the 1820s, it stayed rural for more than a century before growing into one of the state's biggest suburban communities, with tree-lined neighborhoods, parks and a diverse population.
Its history is best seen in the Cherry Hill area, a historic crossroads with restored buildings, a one-room schoolhouse and the Village Theater at Cherry Hill, which hosts plays, concerts and films. The Canton Historical Museum, in a restored 19th-century schoolhouse, tells the story of the township's farming days.
Heritage Park is the township's main green space, near the Summit on the Park community center, and Freedom Park and the I-275 Metro Trail add more room for walking and biking. Ann Arbor, Plymouth's downtown and the museums of Dearborn and Detroit are all an easy drive away.

A modern performing arts venue in the Cherry Hill area, hosting community theater, concerts, dance performances, film screenings and children's shows. It has comfortable seating and good acoustics in an intimate hall. Check the schedule online and book ahead for popular shows.
Canton's central park, with walking paths, a pond, sports fields, a splash pad and playgrounds, close to the Summit on the Park community center. It hosts summer concerts, festivals and holiday events. Bring a picnic and check the township calendar for special events.
A township park with a popular disc golf course winding through trees and open space, along with sports fields and picnic areas. It is a fun place to try disc golf, which is free to play. Bring your own discs and come on weekday mornings for a quieter round.
A long paved trail running beside the I-275 corridor through Canton and neighboring communities, used by cyclists, runners and walkers. It links parks and neighborhoods and offers easy, mostly flat riding. Some sections are close to traffic, so plan a route that uses the greener stretches.
Canton's large community center next to Heritage Park, with indoor pools and a water play area, a fitness center, a gym and banquet spaces. Day passes are available for visitors. It is a good rainy-day option for families who want a swim or a workout.
A township-owned public golf club with 27 holes laid out over rolling ground with ponds and wetlands, plus a clubhouse restaurant. It is open to everyone and reasonably priced. Book tee times online in summer, especially for weekend mornings.
