Livonia is a city of about 95,000 people in western Wayne County, about 20 miles west of downtown Detroit. It grew from farmland into one of the largest suburbs in the Detroit area after World War II, and it is known for safe neighborhoods, big parks and easy access to the whole metro area.
Greenmead Historical Park preserves a 19th-century farmstead with historic homes, a church and a general store moved here from around the region, and the Rosedale Gardens Historic District keeps charming 1920s homes on tree-lined streets. The Orson Everitt House is another early landmark, and Livonia City Hall anchors the civic center.
The Middle Rouge River runs through Hines Park, a long ribbon of woods and trails along Hines Drive, and Newburgh Lake is popular for fishing and paddling. Bicentennial Park has sports fields and recreation areas, Henry Ford Field hosts local baseball, and Laurel Park Place offers shopping on the city's west side.
Historical park run by the city, centered on a Greek Revival farmhouse from the 1840s, with other historic homes, a church, a school and outbuildings moved here from around Livonia. It hosts tours and events. Check open days, and visit during the holiday or flea market events.
Historic dairy barn from the late 1800s, one of the last reminders of Livonia's farming past, preserved by the city and the historical commission. It opens for special events and tours. Look up the open house dates, and combine a visit with nearby Greenmead.

Planned neighborhood laid out in the 1920s with brick and colonial revival homes on curving, tree-lined streets. It is known for its strong community spirit and holiday decorations. Walk or drive through in the evening in December, when many homes are lit up.
Long Wayne County park following the Middle Rouge River along Hines Drive, with trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and lakes. A paved path runs for many miles, and parts of the drive close to cars on some summer days. Bring a bike, and look for deer in the wooded areas.
Lake on the Middle Rouge River inside Hines Park, cleaned and restored in the 1990s and now popular for fishing, paddling and quiet walks. A trail passes along the shore. Bring a fishing rod or a kayak, and check local rules on fish consumption first.
City park in Livonia with sports fields, a playground, picnic areas and walking paths. It hosts youth leagues and community events. It is a good place to stretch your legs or let kids play, and parking is easy and free.
City-run ice arena with rinks for public skating, youth hockey and figure skating, plus skate rentals. It is a fun indoor activity in winter. Check the public skate schedule before going, as hockey practices and games take up much of the ice time.
Upscale enclosed shopping mall with a department store, clothing and specialty shops, restaurants and a food court. It is one of the main shopping spots in western Wayne County. It is a good rainy day option, and weekday mornings are the quietest.
Mid-century civic center building that houses Livonia's city government, set in a campus with the main library and open lawns. It reflects the city's rapid growth after World War II. It is a short stop, and the library next door is good for a quiet break.
