Elmont is a community of about 35,000 people in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on Long Island's border with Queens. It began as a farming hamlet and grew into a dense suburb after World War II, and today it is one of the most diverse communities on Long Island, with large Caribbean, Haitian, South Asian and Latino populations reflected in its shops and restaurants.
Elmont is best known for Belmont Park, the historic thoroughbred racetrack that opened in 1905 and is traditionally home to the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown. The track has been undergoing a major rebuilding, so check the current race schedule before you go. Next to it stands UBS Arena, opened in 2021 as the home of the New York Islanders hockey team and a major concert venue.
The community is also home to St. Vincent de Paul Syro-Malankara Catholic Cathedral, the seat of a Syro-Malankara diocese for North America. Elmont is easy to reach by the Long Island Rail Road, and Manhattan is less than an hour away.
A thoroughbred racetrack opened in 1905 and traditionally home of the Belmont Stakes, the last leg of the Triple Crown. The track has been undergoing a large rebuild, with racing moved elsewhere for a time, so check the New York Racing Association schedule for current race days before planning a visit.
A modern arena that opened in 2021 next to Belmont Park, home ice of the NHL's New York Islanders and a busy venue for major concerts and shows. The LIRR Elmont-UBS Arena station makes it easy to reach without a car. Arrive early, as security lines and parking lots fill before big events.
The cathedral of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy serving the United States and Canada, an Eastern Catholic church with roots in Kerala, India. Services follow the West Syriac liturgical tradition. Visitors are welcome at Sunday liturgy; dress modestly and check the parish schedule first.
A local memorial in Elmont honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, including people from this part of Nassau County. It is a quiet place for reflection and hosts community remembrance gatherings around the anniversary. Please treat it as a place of mourning and be respectful.
Hempstead Turnpike and nearby streets in Elmont are lined with small Caribbean, Haitian, Guyanese and South Asian bakeries, takeout spots and restaurants. Look for jerk chicken, griot, oxtail, roti and patties. Many places are takeout-focused, so it is a good stop before a race or a game.
Elmont's public library is a busy community hub with reading rooms, a children's area, computers and a regular calendar of talks, cultural events, film screenings and family programs. Visitors can drop in to use the reading spaces. Check the library website for events open to the public.
