About Bensalem

Bensalem is a township of about 62,000 people in lower Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River just northeast of Philadelphia. Established in 1692, it is one of the oldest townships in the county, and in the 18th and 19th centuries wealthy Philadelphia families built country estates along its riverfront.

The finest of these is Andalusia, the Biddle family estate, whose Greek Revival mansion and gardens overlook the Delaware and are open for tours. Today Bensalem is best known for Parx Casino and Parx Racing, a thoroughbred track that hosts the Pennsylvania Derby each September. Neshaminy State Park, where Neshaminy Creek meets the Delaware, has a swimming pool, a marina, riverside trails and views of the Philadelphia skyline.

The township is also a convenient base for exploring the region, with Neshaminy Mall for shopping and easy access to I-95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Center City Philadelphia is about 30 minutes away, and the historic towns of Bucks County, including New Hope and Doylestown, are within an hour.

Best seasonMay to October for the river, gardens and racing; September for the Pennsylvania Derby.
Ideal stayOne day, or a base for Philadelphia and Bucks County.
ArrivingPhiladelphia International Airport is about 35 minutes away; SEPTA trains stop at Cornwells Heights and Eddington stations.
