About Bayfield

Bayfield is a small village on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, set where the Bayfield River meets the lake in Ontario's Huron County. It was laid out in the nineteenth century, and its tree-shaded streets, wooden storefronts and old cottages give it the feel of a long-established summer retreat.

Most visits revolve around Main Street, where galleries, boutiques and cafes occupy heritage buildings, and The Little Inn has hosted travelers for generations. Clan Gregor Square and the Town Hall serve as the village's gathering places, with concerts and theatre in season. The Bayfield Historical Society Heritage Centre covers local history, and down by the harbour and marina, sailboats and fishing tugs share the river mouth. Public beaches below the bluffs are popular for swimming and especially for watching the sun go down over Lake Huron, while the Bayfield River invites paddling.

Bayfield suits couples and families looking for an unhurried lakeside break with good food and little traffic. Goderich, a short drive north, adds its distinctive octagonal town square and harbour, and Pinery Provincial Park to the south offers dune trails and miles of sand. Summer is the liveliest season, though September and October are calmer and still mild.

Best seasonJune through September brings warm lake water, open shops and long sunset evenings.
Ideal stayA weekend suits the village; add a day for Goderich or Pinery Provincial Park.
ArrivingMost visitors drive, coming from London or Toronto along regional highways to the lakeshore.
