About Abington

Abington Township is a community of about 58,000 people in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on the northern border of Philadelphia. Settled by English Quakers in the late 1600s along the Old York Road, it is one of the oldest townships in the state. It includes villages such as Glenside, Roslyn, Ardsley, McKinnon and parts of Willow Grove and Huntingdon Valley.

The township's long history shows in landmarks such as Abington Friends Meeting, a Quaker meeting dating to the late 1600s, and Abington Presbyterian Church, founded in 1714. In the early 20th century wealthy Philadelphians built country estates here, and some, like the Rosenwald estate now known as Alverthorpe Park, have become public green spaces.

Today visitors come for concerts at Glenside's historic Keswick Theatre, art and outdoor sculpture at Abington Art Center, woodland trails at Briar Bush Nature Center and Lorimer Park, and shopping at Willow Grove Park Mall, built on the site of the famous Willow Grove amusement park. Center City Philadelphia is about 30 minutes away by car or SEPTA Regional Rail.

Best seasonApril to October for parks, sculpture gardens and outdoor events; fall color is excellent.
Ideal stayA day trip from Philadelphia, or one night for a show at the Keswick.
ArrivingPhiladelphia International Airport is about 40 minutes away; SEPTA Regional Rail serves Glenside, Ardsley, Noble and other stations.
