North Las Vegas is a city of about 260,000 people directly north of Las Vegas, with mountain views in every direction and a fast-growing collection of parks and neighborhoods. Incorporated in 1946, it grew alongside Nellis Air Force Base and the railroad, and today it offers a quieter base than the Strip while staying only a short drive from it.
Craig Ranch Regional Park is the city's showpiece, with an amphitheater for concerts, gardens, dog parks, a skate park and long walking paths. In the master-planned Aliante community, the Aliante Nature Discovery Park has lakes, a giant play area themed on Ice Age animals, and wide lawns, and Aliante Casino adds dining and entertainment close to home.
On the city's northern edge, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument protects desert land where mammoths, camels and other Ice Age animals once roamed, with fossils still found in the washes. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR races, sits to the northeast, and downtown Las Vegas with Fremont Street is only a few minutes south.
A large city park in North Las Vegas with an amphitheater for concerts, a skate park, dog parks, sports fields, a community garden and playgrounds. It hosts festivals and events throughout the year. Arrive early on hot days, as shade is limited in some areas, and check the amphitheater schedule.
A family park in the Aliante area with a lake, dinosaur-themed playground, splash pad, sculptures and walking paths. Geese and ducks live on the lake. It is great for younger children; visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
A historic park preserving remnants of Kiel Ranch, one of the oldest settlements in the Las Vegas Valley dating to the 1850s and 1860s, with an adobe structure, a cemetery, wetlands and walking paths. It is a quiet spot to learn about early settlement. Signs explain the ranch history.
A national monument on the northern edge of North Las Vegas protecting Ice Age fossil beds where remains of Columbian mammoths, ancient camels and other animals have been found. Facilities are still limited, with some trails and ranger-led walks. Check the park website before visiting.
A major racing complex north of the city with a superspeedway that hosts NASCAR races, plus a dirt track and drag strip. Fans can attend races, driving experiences and other motorsports events. Check the race schedule, buy tickets ahead and expect heavy traffic on race weekends.
A famous golf course in North Las Vegas designed by Tom Fazio for Steve Wynn, with lush landscaping, pine trees and waterfalls hidden in the desert. It is regularly ranked among the top public courses in the US. Play requires an MGM Resorts hotel stay and a high green fee.
A casino resort in North Las Vegas popular with locals, featuring gaming, restaurants, bars and an events center. It overlooks Aliante Nature Discovery Park. It is a quieter alternative to the Strip, with free parking and lower table minimums.
A 1940s-themed casino hotel in North Las Vegas with slot machines, table games, restaurants, a buffet and live entertainment. It is a locals' casino near Nellis Air Force Base. It has free parking and is usually less crowded than casinos on the Strip.
