About Sedona

Sedona sits at the base of Arizona's Mogollon Rim, north of Phoenix, where layers of iron-stained sandstone have weathered into buttes, spires and canyons that glow deep red and orange early and late in the day. The town grew from a small ranching and orchard settlement into an artists' community and later a center for wellness retreats, and it keeps a relaxed, outdoorsy character.

Days here revolve around the trails. Easy paths loop around the base of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, while a steep scramble climbs Cathedral Rock for views across Oak Creek. Devil's Bridge, a natural sandstone arch, draws hikers at first light, and the quieter routes through Boynton Canyon and Soldier Pass wind among junipers and sinkholes. Slide Rock State Park's natural water chute and the shaded West Fork Trail are summer favorites. Between walks, people visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross, set into the rock, browse the galleries at Tlaquepaque, or wait for sunset at Airport Mesa or Red Rock Crossing, where Cathedral Rock mirrors in the creek.

Hikers, photographers and couples looking for a few comfortable days outdoors get the most from Sedona. Spring and fall bring the best hiking temperatures, while summer afternoons are hot and monsoon storms arrive in July and August. Uptown holds most shops and restaurants, and Jerome, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon are within day-trip range.

Best seasonSpring and fall bring mild hiking weather, avoiding summer heat and the occasional winter snow.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers the main trails, sunset viewpoints and a drive through Oak Creek Canyon.
ArrivingMost visitors fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor and drive north; Flagstaff's smaller airport is closer.
