About Las Vegas

Las Vegas rose from a railroad stop in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada to become one of the world's best-known entertainment cities after Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931. The Las Vegas Strip, a long boulevard of themed megaresorts, is the center of the action, while the older downtown area preserves a more vintage atmosphere. Surrounding the city are red rock canyons and stark desert mountains.

On the Strip, the Fountains of Bellagio perform choreographed shows to music, and the Sphere, a giant LED-covered venue, has quickly become a landmark alongside the High Roller observation wheel. The "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign at the south end is a popular photo stop. Downtown, the Fremont Street Experience covers a pedestrian mall with a canopy of lights, and the Neon Museum displays restored signs from the city's past. The Mob Museum, in a former federal courthouse, covers organized crime and law enforcement history. Outside the city, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers a scenic drive, hiking and climbing, and Hoover Dam on the Colorado River is a classic excursion. Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour away, is known for its vivid red sandstone.

Las Vegas suits travelers interested in shows, dining, nightlife and convenient access to desert parks. Summer temperatures are extreme, so outdoor outings work best in cooler months or early mornings.

Best seasonSpring and fall offer comfortable temperatures for both the Strip and nearby desert parks.
Ideal stayThree to four days allows shows and dining plus day trips to Red Rock or Hoover Dam.
ArrivingHarry Reid International Airport sits close to the Strip; many travelers also drive from Southern California.
