About Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu City is a desert resort city of about 57,000 people on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu, a reservoir on the Colorado River in western Arizona. It was founded in 1964 by chainsaw magnate Robert P. McCulloch, who famously bought the 1830s London Bridge from the City of London in 1968 and had it shipped stone by stone and rebuilt here, opening in 1971.

The bridge spans the Bridgewater Channel, a man-made waterway lined with beaches, boat traffic and the English Village shopping area. The city also claims more lighthouses than any other in the country, with scaled-down replicas of famous American lighthouses built around the shoreline. Boating is the main event: houseboats, jet skis and pontoons crowd the lake in summer, and spring break draws big crowds.

Beyond the water, hikers head to the Crack in the Mountain trail in SARA Park, paddlers explore the red-rock walls of Topock Gorge to the north, and families relax at Lake Havasu State Park and Cattail Cove. Winters are mild and sunny, making it a favorite with snowbirds.

Best seasonOctober to May for mild weather; summer brings boating crowds and highs well above 100F.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the bridge, beaches and a day on the lake.
ArrivingLas Vegas is about 2.5 hours north by car and Phoenix about 3 hours southeast; Lake Havasu City has a small municipal airport.
