About Nelson

Nelson sits on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake in the Selkirk Mountains of southeastern British Columbia. Founded during a silver-mining boom in the late 1800s, it has kept an unusually complete collection of heritage buildings, and over the decades it has attracted artists, outdoor enthusiasts and a strong independent spirit.

Baker Street Historic District is the heart of town, lined with brick and stone buildings housing cafés, bookshops and galleries. Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History occupies a grand former city hall and post office, and in summer the restored Nelson Electric Tramway runs along the waterfront. Lakeside Park, near the Big Orange Bridge, has a sandy beach and gardens, while Cottonwood Falls Park and Gyro Park offer quieter green spaces and views. The Pulpit Rock Trail climbs steeply across the lake to a viewpoint over the town, and the Nelson-Salmo Great Northern Trail follows an old rail line for cycling and walking. Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park offers alpine lakes and backcountry hiking, and in winter, Whitewater Ski Resort draws skiers for deep powder.

Nelson suits travelers who enjoy small towns, arts scenes and outdoor activities. The streets are steep but walkable. Summer and winter are the busiest seasons, and Ainsworth Hot Springs is a scenic drive up the lake.

Best seasonJuly through September for lake swimming and hiking; January through March for powder skiing.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the town, a lake outing and a hike.
ArrivingThe West Kootenay Regional Airport near Castlegar is closest, though weather can affect flights; many drive in.
