About Ucluelet

Ucluelet occupies a rocky peninsula at the southern end of the Long Beach stretch of Vancouver Island's west coast, facing Barkley Sound and the open Pacific. Its name comes from the Nuu-chah-nulth language and is usually translated as "safe harbour," a fitting description for a town that grew around fishing boats sheltering in its inlet. It remains a working coastal community, smaller and somewhat quieter than its neighbor Tofino.

The town's signature walk is the Wild Pacific Trail, a cliff-edge route that loops past Amphitrite Point Lighthouse and offers wide views of surge channels, sea stacks and passing ships. Terrace Beach and Big Beach are small coves where tide pools and driftwood invite slow exploring. The Ucluelet Aquarium focuses on local marine life and releases its animals back into the sea. Charters leave the harbour for whale watching, and in season some tours look for black bears foraging along the shoreline. Cyclists and walkers use the ʔapsčiik t̓ašii pathway, which runs through the national park toward Long Beach.

Ucluelet appeals to hikers, photographers and families who prefer a slightly slower pace. Rain is common outside summer, but winter storms bring their own crowd of watchers. Staying here also places Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Tofino within easy reach.

Best seasonSummer gives the most reliable trail weather; winter draws storm watchers to the exposed headlands.
Ideal stayTwo to four days allows time for the trail, a boat tour and nearby beaches.
ArrivingVisitors usually drive Highway 4 from the Nanaimo area, turning south at the junction near the national park.
