About Cochrane

Cochrane is a fast-growing town in the Bow River valley just west of Calgary, where the prairie begins to rise toward the Rocky Mountain foothills. Its roots are in ranching, and western heritage remains part of its identity, even as it has become a popular place to live for people who work in the city.

First Street downtown holds cafés, boutiques and restaurants, and a stop at MacKay's ice cream, a local institution for generations, is something of a tradition for road-trippers. The Cochrane Ranche Historic Site marks the location of an early large-scale cattle ranch and offers walking trails with views across the valley. The Bow River pathways connect neighborhoods along the water, and Big Hill, the steep slope that frames the town to the east, offers a sweeping viewpoint. Nearby, Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park protects river valley grassland with paved and gravel trails, while Big Hill Springs Provincial Park features small cascades in a spring-fed coulee.

With the city on one side and the mountains on the other, Cochrane makes an easy base or a relaxed stop. In summer, Ghost Lake to the west draws sailors and windsurfers, and in winter it can attract ice skaters. Kananaskis Country is within easy reach, and the town sits along the scenic Cowboy Trail route through the foothills.

Best seasonJune through September, when trails and downtown patios are at their best.
Ideal stayA day or overnight, or longer as a base for foothills and mountain excursions.
ArrivingMost travelers drive west from Calgary International Airport, a short trip across the city.
