About Tofino

Tofino sits at the tip of the Esowista Peninsula on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where the road ends and Clayoquot Sound opens into a maze of inlets, islands and temperate rainforest. The sound is a UNESCO biosphere region and the traditional territory of Nuu-chah-nulth nations, including the Tla-o-qui-aht and Ahousaht. Once a small fishing and logging settlement, the town has become one of Canada's best-known surf communities without losing its weathered, end-of-the-road feel.

Days here tend to follow the tide and the weather. Surfers head to Cox Bay and Chesterman Beach, while the long sweep of sand inside Pacific Rim National Park Reserve draws walkers and beachcombers. Water taxis cross to Meares Island, where a boardwalk trail winds among enormous old-growth cedars, and longer boat or floatplane trips reach the natural pools of Hot Springs Cove. Whale-watching tours look for gray and humpback whales, and guided paddles explore the sheltered waters of Clayoquot Sound. Back in town, the harbour, galleries and the Naa'Waya'Sum Gardens make for an easy afternoon.

Tofino suits people who want the outdoors without roughing it. Summer is busy and lodging books early, while late fall and winter bring dramatic storms, quieter beaches and cozy inns built for watching the surf roll in. Ucluelet, a short drive south, makes a natural side trip.

Best seasonSummer offers the driest weather, while November through February brings the famous winter storm-watching season.
Ideal stayThree to five days covers the beaches, a boat trip and a few slow mornings.
ArrivingMost travelers drive Highway 4 across Vancouver Island; small flights also serve the Tofino-Long Beach airport.
