About Coeur d'Alene

Coeur d'Alene sits on the northern shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene in the Idaho Panhandle, ringed by forested mountains. The name comes from French fur traders, who applied it to the local Indigenous people, and the Coeur d'Alene Tribe's reservation lies at the southern end of the lake. Mining and timber once drove the regional economy, and today the city is a popular summer resort known for its lake, trails and relaxed pace.

Tubbs Hill, a wooded peninsula next to downtown, offers a loop trail with rocky coves and lake views. The marina beside the Coeur d'Alene Resort is known for its long floating boardwalk, and McEuen Park and City Park provide lawns, playgrounds and a beach. Sherman Avenue is the main downtown street, lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. Lake Coeur d'Alene cruises depart from the waterfront in summer. Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive follows the shoreline east to Higgins Point, a good place to spot eagles in winter, and the Mineral Ridge trail climbs above Beauty Bay.

Cyclists find excellent rides nearby. Cyclists ride a paved rail-trail that runs across the Panhandle, and in the Bitterroots a separate gravel route follows an old railbed over towering trestles and through dark tunnels. Old Mission State Park preserves the oldest standing building in Idaho, a mission church built by Jesuits and Coeur d'Alene people.

Best seasonSummer brings warm lake days and open bike trails, while early fall is quieter and still pleasant.
Ideal stayThree days allows lake time, a Tubbs Hill hike and a day on one of the region's rail trails.
ArrivingSpokane International Airport, across the Washington border, is the usual gateway via Interstate 90.
