Pasco is a city in southeastern Washington and one of the Tri-Cities, along with Kennewick and Richland, set where the Snake River flows into the Columbia. It was founded in the 1880s as a railroad town, grew with irrigated farming in the surrounding desert, and is now a fast-growing city with a large Hispanic community and a farming economy built on potatoes, apples, hops and wine grapes.
Sacajawea Historical State Park marks the confluence where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in October 1805, and it includes an interpretive center and art installations by Maya Lin. Downtown Pasco, around Lewis Street, has Mexican bakeries, taquerias and the Pasco Farmers Market, while the domed Franklin County Courthouse and the Franklin County Historical Museum recall the city's early years.
The cable-stayed Ed Hendler Bridge crosses the Columbia to Kennewick, Chiawana Park offers a long stretch of riverbank, and the Tri-City Dust Devils play minor league baseball at Gesa Stadium. Columbia Valley wineries are an easy drive away.
A riverside park at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in 1805. It has an interpretive center about Sacagawea and the expedition, art installations by Maya Lin, lawns, picnic areas and a boat launch. Check interpretive center hours.
An early 1900s neoclassical courthouse with a tall dome and an elegant marble interior, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still used by the county. It is one of the most impressive buildings in the Tri-Cities. View it from the grounds or step inside during business hours.
A small museum housed in Pasco's former Carnegie library building, with exhibits on Native American history, the railroad, farming, Pasco's wartime naval air station and the people who settled the area. It is a good introduction to the city. Opening days are limited, so check before going.
The historic downtown around Lewis Street, with brick buildings, Mexican bakeries, taquerias, markets and Western wear shops that reflect the city's large Hispanic community. It is the best place in the Tri-Cities for authentic Mexican food. Come hungry and try a few spots on foot.
An open-air farmers market downtown where local growers sell fresh fruit, vegetables, peppers, flowers and baked goods during the growing season, with food vendors and a lively atmosphere. Saturdays are the busiest. Come early in summer for the best selection and cooler temperatures.
The ballpark of the Tri-City Dust Devils, a minor league baseball team, with affordable seats, a grassy berm and summer promotions such as fireworks nights. Evening games are pleasant after the desert heat fades. Buy tickets ahead for weekend and holiday games.
A large city park along the Columbia River with lawns, picnic shelters, a playground, a boat launch and access to the paved riverside trail that runs toward the Tri-Cities. It is a favorite spot for walks, fishing and watching the sunset over the water. Bring water and sun protection in summer, as shade is limited.
A wildlife refuge just across the Snake River from Pasco with wetlands, ponds and riverbanks that attract ducks, geese, herons and other birds, especially in the fall and winter migration. A short trail and viewing areas start near the headquarters in Burbank. Bring binoculars.
