About Canmore

Canmore is a mountain town in Alberta's Bow Valley, just outside the eastern boundary of Banff National Park. It began as a coal-mining town in the late nineteenth century, and after the mines closed, its role as host of Nordic events at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics helped reshape it into a recreation center. The jagged peaks around it, including the Three Sisters, make it one of the most scenic towns in the Rockies.

Main Street, with its cafes, galleries and outdoor shops, has a relaxed, local atmosphere compared with busier Banff. The Canmore Museum covers the town's mining heritage and growth. The Canmore Nordic Centre, built for the Olympics, offers cross-country ski trails in winter and mountain biking and hiking in summer. Grassi Lakes is a short hike to small, clear ponds beneath limestone cliffs, popular with rock climbers. Ha Ling Peak is a steep but rewarding climb with views over the valley. Farther along the gravel road beyond, Spray Lakes Reservoir sits beneath towering peaks. Bow Valley Provincial Park lies east of town, and Kananaskis Village is a gateway to the broader Kananaskis region. Banff and its Upper Hot Springs are a short drive away.

Canmore suits hikers, climbers and travelers wanting a quieter base near Banff. Summer and winter are both busy, while spring and fall see fewer visitors.

Best seasonJuly through September for hiking; December through March for cross-country skiing and winter sports.
Ideal stayThree to five days allows hikes, Kananaskis trips and time in Banff.
ArrivingMost visitors fly into Calgary and drive west on the Trans-Canada Highway; shuttles also operate.
