About Lewiston

Lewiston sits where the Snake and Clearwater rivers meet, at the bottom of a deep canyon some 700 feet above sea level, which makes it the lowest point in Idaho and, thanks to barge traffic down the Columbia system, the state's only seaport. Lewis and Clark passed through in 1805, and the town later boomed as a supply post for the gold rush and briefly served as the first capital of Idaho Territory.

The mild river climate brings an early spring, celebrated with the Dogwood Festival, and long summers for paddling, fishing and cycling the levee paths that follow both rivers. Jet boats leave from the area for Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America, while Hells Gate State Park offers camping and beaches just south of town. Downtown Main Street has historic buildings, cafes and the Lewis-Clark Center for Arts and History.

Above the city, the old Lewiston Hill highway climbs about 2,000 feet in tight switchbacks to a broad view of the valley. A short drive east leads to the Spalding site of the Nez Perce National Historical Park, devoted to the Nez Perce people.

Best seasonApril to October; spring arrives early in the canyon, and midsummer is hot.
Ideal stayTwo days, including a full-day jet boat trip into Hells Canyon.
ArrivingLewiston-Nez Perce County Airport has regional flights; Spokane is about two hours north by car.
