About Invermere

Invermere sits on the shore of Windermere Lake, with the Purcells rising on one side of the Columbia Valley and the Rockies on the other. It overlooks Lake Windermere, a broad, warm section of the upper Columbia River system, and serves as the main service town for a valley known for its sunny climate. The Ktunaxa and Secwépemc peoples have long ties to this land.

Summer brings swimmers, boaters and paddlers to Lake Windermere, while winter can turn it into the Lake Windermere Whiteway, a long groomed track for skating and cross-country skiing when ice conditions allow. The Windermere Valley Museum explores local settlement history, and Bavin Glass is a working studio where visitors can watch glassblowing. The Columbia Wetlands, one of the largest intact wetlands in North America, support abundant birdlife best seen by canoe. West of town, a road climbs along Toby Creek Canyon to Panorama Mountain Resort, popular for skiing and summer biking. Mount Swansea is known as a launch site for hang gliders and paragliders, and the surrounding hills are laced with hiking and biking routes. Radium Hot Springs lies a short drive north.

Invermere suits families and outdoor-minded travelers who want a lake holiday with mountain scenery. July and August are lively; shoulder seasons are calm and less expensive.

Best seasonJuly and August for lake swimming and boating; midwinter for skiing and skating when the ice is good.
Ideal stayThree to four days allows lake time plus trips to Panorama and Radium.
ArrivingTravelers drive Highway 93/95; Calgary and Cranbrook are the nearest airports used by visitors.
