About Fernie

Fernie is a mountain town in the Elk Valley of southeastern British Columbia, close to the Alberta border. It grew up around coal mining in the late nineteenth century, and after a fire swept through in 1908 the downtown was rebuilt with brick and stone, giving it a solid, historic look that survives today. Jagged peaks rise on every side, most famously the triple summit of the Three Sisters.

Winter revolves around Fernie Alpine Resort, whose bowls are known for deep powder snow. In the warmer months the same slopes and surrounding hills turn into a network of mountain-bike and hiking trails. Heiko's Trail climbs past waterfalls and canyons into the backcountry, while the paths around Island Lake wind among old cedars beneath alpine ridges. Mount Fernie Provincial Park offers gentler forest walks and camping close to town. The Elk River draws anglers and floaters in summer. In town, the Fernie Museum covers the valley's mining and railway stories, the Fernie Arts Co-op shows local work, and Fernie Brewing Company is a popular stop after a day outside.

Fernie suits skiers, riders and anglers who like a real town with cafes and old storefronts rather than a purpose-built village. Summer and midwinter are busiest; spring and late fall are quiet transition times.

Best seasonJanuary through March for powder skiing; July through September for hiking, biking and river trips.
Ideal stayThree to five days allows several days on the mountain plus time downtown.
ArrivingVisitors usually drive Highway 3, flying into Cranbrook or making the longer drive from Calgary.
