About Yakima

Yakima is a city of about 95,000 people in the sunny Yakima Valley of central Washington, on the dry side of the Cascade Mountains. The valley is one of the richest farming regions in the country, growing most of America's hops along with apples, cherries and grapes, and it has become a popular wine and craft beer destination.

Downtown Yakima centers on tree-lined Naches Avenue, the historic Capitol Theatre and a busy Sunday farmers market in summer and fall. The Yakima Valley Museum tells the story of the valley's Native peoples, pioneers and farms, and Yakima Valley College has a green campus near downtown.

The Yakima Greenway follows the Yakima River with paved trails, ponds and parks such as Sarge Hubbard Park, and Lookout Point and Cowiche Canyon offer views over the valley. Dozens of wineries in the Rattlesnake Hills and around the valley pour tastings, and Mount Rainier rises about two hours to the west.

Best seasonMay to October for sunny days, the farmers market, wine tasting and the hop harvest in late summer.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown and the Greenway, two with wine country.
ArrivingYakima Air Terminal has flights to Seattle, which is about 140 miles northwest.
