About Whistler

Whistler is a mountain resort town in the Coast Mountains north of Vancouver, built around two large ski mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb. It hosted alpine events during the 2010 Winter Olympics, and its pedestrian village of lodges, shops and patios was designed from scratch for visitors. The surrounding valley is the shared territory of the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations.

Winter centers on skiing and snowboarding, but summer has become just as busy. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola links the two mountaintops, giving sightseers and hikers access to alpine trails, while the Whistler Mountain Bike Park sends riders down lift-served runs. Lost Lake offers swimming and easy forest paths close to the village. On rainy days, the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre presents the history and art of the two nations, the Audain Art Museum holds a strong collection of British Columbia art, and the small Whistler Museum covers the town's origins. Brandywine Falls and Nairn Falls are short drives along the highway, and the turquoise Joffre Lakes lie farther north past Pemberton.

Whistler suits active travelers and groups who like having restaurants and nightlife at the bottom of the lifts. Prices peak in midwinter and on holiday weekends; shoulder seasons are quieter, though some lifts and trails close between seasons.

Best seasonDecember through March for snow sports; July through September for alpine hiking, biking and lakes.
Ideal stayFour to six days allows several ski or bike days plus time to explore beyond the village.
ArrivingMost visitors fly into Vancouver and travel the Sea-to-Sky Highway north by car or shuttle bus.
