About Needham

Wrapped on three sides by bends of the Charles River, Needham feels greener than its location 12 miles west of downtown Boston suggests. Marshes, meadows and conservation land line the river, while the town center keeps a classic New England common and a brick-and-clapboard main street along Great Plain Avenue.

Settlers farmed the area as part of Dedham until Needham became its own town in 1711. The arrival of the railroad in the 1800s turned it into a commuter suburb, and the tall broadcast towers on its hills still point to its role in Boston television. The 1902 Town Hall, restored and reopened in 2011, anchors the common where parades and summer concerts gather the town.

Most visitors come for the outdoors: paddling or walking the Charles River Peninsula, birding the marsh boardwalks of Cutler Park, and crossing the granite arch of Echo Bridge above Hemlock Gorge. Wellesley, Newton and the Boston skyline are each a short drive or a commuter rail ride away.

Best seasonLate spring and early fall, when the river meadows and marshes are at their best and farm stands are full.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day, easily combined with Wellesley, Newton or Boston.
ArrivingAbout 25 minutes by car from Boston via I-95/Route 128; the MBTA Needham Line runs from Back Bay and South Station.
