About Boston

Boston, founded by Puritan colonists in 1630, is one of the oldest cities in the United States and a cradle of the American Revolution. Built around a harbor and the Charles River, it pairs brick row houses and colonial landmarks with renowned universities and museums, and its compact size makes it one of the most walkable cities in the country.

Boston Common, the nation's oldest public park, marks the start of the Freedom Trail. Next door, the Public Garden is known for its swan boats, and the gas-lit streets of Beacon Hill climb toward the State House. Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market host food stalls and street performers. In the North End, Italian bakeries surround the Paul Revere House and the Old North Church, where lanterns signaled the British march in 1775. Across the harbor in Charlestown, the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat, is berthed at the Navy Yard below the Bunker Hill Monument. In Back Bay, Copley Square pairs Trinity Church with the Boston Public Library. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum anchor the Fenway, near Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in the major leagues.

Boston suits history buffs, families and sports fans. Winters are cold and snowy. Cambridge, home to Harvard and MIT, lies across the river, and Salem and Cape Cod make good side trips.

Best seasonSeptember and October bring crisp weather and fall color; late spring is also comfortable.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers the Freedom Trail, a major museum, Cambridge and a ballgame.
ArrivingLogan International Airport sits close to downtown with subway links, and Amtrak trains arrive at South Station.
