About Weymouth

Weymouth is a city of about 57,000 people on the South Shore of Massachusetts, about 12 miles southeast of Boston. Settled in 1622 as Wessagusset, it is the second-oldest European settlement in Massachusetts after Plymouth. Abigail Adams, wife of President John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams, was born here in 1744, and her birthplace is preserved as a museum.

Weymouth Town Hall, with its white cupola, is a replica of the Old State House in Boston, and the town's historic districts include Jackson Square and Weymouth Landing, with shops and restaurants along the Back River. The Fore River Bridge, a modern lift bridge, crosses to Quincy beside the old shipyard.

Weymouth has a long shoreline on Boston Harbor. Webb Memorial State Park offers harbor views of the Boston skyline and walking paths, and Great Esker Park, along the Back River, protects one of the tallest eskers in North America with wooded trails. Wessagusset Beach and the harbor islands are popular in summer, and MBTA commuter trains connect the city to Boston.

Best seasonJune to September for beaches and harbor views; fall for foliage on the trails.
Ideal stayOne day for the Abigail Adams Birthplace, Great Esker Park, Webb Memorial State Park and Weymouth Landing.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 30 minutes north; MBTA commuter rail stops at several Weymouth stations.
