About Marlborough

Marlborough is a small city of about 41,000 people in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, roughly 25 miles west of Boston where Interstate 495 meets Route 20 and Route 290. Settled in the 1650s, it was burned during King Philip's War in 1676 and later grew into a busy shoe-manufacturing town. Today it is a business hub for technology and medical companies, with a compact historic downtown on Main Street.

Marlborough's most unusual landmark is the John Brown Bell, taken from Harpers Ferry by local Civil War soldiers and now hanging in a small tower on Union Common. The Peter Rice Homestead, run by the local historical society, and the grand City Hall add to the downtown's historic character.

Much of the appeal is outdoors. The Assabet River Rail Trail starts in Marlborough and heads north to Hudson, Fort Meadow Reservoir and Lake Williams are popular for paddling and fishing, and Callahan State Park and the Desert Natural Area offer miles of woodland trails. Shopping at Solomon Pond Mall and easy access to Boston, Worcester and Concord make it a convenient base.

Best seasonMay to October, with colorful foliage in early to mid October.
Ideal stayA day for the trails and downtown, or use it as a base for Boston and Worcester.
ArrivingAbout 45 minutes from Boston Logan Airport and 25 minutes from Worcester Regional Airport by car via I-90 and I-495.
