About Malden

Malden is a city of about 65,000 people in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, five miles north of downtown Boston on the MBTA Orange Line. Settled by English colonists in the 1640s, it grew into a busy industrial city in the 1800s, when it was home to rubber manufacturing, and today it is one of the most diverse cities in the Boston area, with large Chinese, Vietnamese, Haitian and Brazilian communities.

Malden's architectural highlight is its public library, the Converse Memorial Building designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, with a reading room and art gallery. Fellsmere Park, laid out by the Olmsted firm around a pond, is a favorite place for a stroll, and Waitt's Mount offers a sweeping view of the Boston skyline. Pine Banks Park adds woods and playing fields on the Melrose line.

Malden Center around Pleasant Street has an excellent range of Asian restaurants and bakeries, and Bell Rock Memorial Park marks the site of the town's first meetinghouse. The Middlesex Fells Reservation lies just to the north, and Boston is about 20 minutes away by train.

Best seasonMay to October for parks and walks; fall for colors in the nearby Fells.
Ideal stayHalf a day, or a budget-friendly base for visiting Boston by Orange Line.
ArrivingBoston Logan International Airport is about 20 minutes by car; Malden Center station has Orange Line and commuter rail service.
