About Northampton

Northampton packs the energy of a much larger city into a walkable Pioneer Valley downtown, with independent bookshops, cafes, galleries and live music venues lining Main Street. Settled in 1654 beside the Connecticut River, it later became home to Smith College and to Calvin Coolidge, who served as mayor before reaching the White House.

The Smith College campus, landscaped on a plan by the Olmsted firm, holds the Lyman Conservatory and botanic garden, a respected art museum and the wooded shores of Paradise Pond. In town, the Academy of Music Theatre has staged shows since 1891, the Calvin Theatre books touring bands, and Forbes Library keeps the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum. Thornes Marketplace fills a former department store with small shops.

Outside the center, Look Park offers a miniature train and pedal boats, the Manhan Rail Trail heads toward Easthampton, and Mass Audubon's Arcadia sanctuary follows an old river oxbow. Amherst, the Mount Holyoke Range and the hill towns are close by.

Best seasonLate September to October for foliage; spring for the bulb show and summer for outdoor music.
Ideal stayTwo days for downtown, the Smith campus and a bike ride, longer to add Amherst or the hill towns.
ArrivingAmtrak's Valley Flyer and Vermonter stop downtown; Bradley International Airport near Hartford is about 50 minutes south via I-91.
