About Allston

Loud guitars, cheap noodles and moving trucks every September 1: Allston is Boston's student quarter, a dense grid of triple-decker houses, rock clubs and global restaurants between Boston University and the Charles River. Locals call its busiest corners Allston Village, and the neighborhood's nickname, Allston Rock City, comes from decades of bands that started in its basements.

The area grew around a railroad station opened in the 1860s and named for the painter Washington Allston, and it joined Boston together with Brighton in 1874. Along the river, Harvard has slowly built a second campus in what is called Lower Allston, from the 1903 Harvard Stadium and the Business School to the glass Science and Engineering Complex finished in 2020.

Spend a day walking the riverbank paths in Christian Herter Park, touring the Harvard buildings across from Cambridge, then eating your way down Harvard and Brighton Avenues before a show at the Paradise Rock Club or Brighton Music Hall. The Green Line and frequent buses connect it to downtown Boston in about 25 minutes.

Best seasonMay to October for the river paths and Harvard football weekends; avoid September 1, the city's chaotic moving day.
Ideal stayA half day plus an evening for food and live music.
ArrivingGreen Line B branch along Commonwealth Avenue or the 66 bus on Harvard Avenue; about 25 minutes from downtown Boston.
