About Medford

Medford is a city of about 60,000 people on the Mystic River just north of Boston. Settled in 1630, it is one of the oldest towns in the country, and in colonial times it was famous for shipbuilding and Medford rum. Lydia Maria Child wrote the Thanksgiving poem "Over the River and Through the Wood" about her grandfather's house here.

Tufts University sits on a hill on the Medford-Somerville line, and its campus has fine views of the Boston skyline. Medford Square has historic buildings, restaurants and the Chevalier Theatre, a restored 1940 venue that hosts concerts and comedy. The Royall House and Slave Quarters is a museum telling the story of a colonial estate and the enslaved people who lived there.

The Middlesex Fells Reservation covers wooded hills, ponds and reservoirs along the north side of the city, with trails and Spot Pond. The Mystic River Reservation offers riverside paths and Wright's Pond has a summer beach, and the Green Line extension links Medford directly to Boston.

Best seasonMay to October for the Fells trails, the river and fall foliage.
Ideal stayOne day for Medford Square, the Royall House, Tufts and the Middlesex Fells.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 20 minutes away; the MBTA Green Line serves the city.
