About Newton

Newton is a leafy city of about 90,000 people just west of Boston, made up of 13 historic villages such as Newton Centre, Newtonville, Waban and Auburndale, each with its own small center. It is one of the Boston area's most desirable places to live, with grand Victorian homes, good schools and easy trips into the city on the Green Line and commuter rail.

Newton's most famous stretch of road is Commonwealth Avenue, where the Boston Marathon passes the city hall and climbs Heartbreak Hill every April in front of huge cheering crowds. The Newton City Hall and War Memorial sits in a landscaped park, the Newton Free Library is one of the busiest in the state, and Boston College's Gothic campus overlooks the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.

Newton Centre has restaurants, cafés and shops around a green, and the Charles River winds along the city's western and northern edges, with canoe rentals in Auburndale and the arched Echo Bridge in Newton Upper Falls. Hammond Pond and Webster Woods offer trails close to the city.

Best seasonApril for the Boston Marathon, May to June for blooming villages, and October for fall foliage.
Ideal stayHalf a day for Newton Centre and Heartbreak Hill, longer as a base for Boston.
ArrivingBoston Logan International Airport is about 12 miles east, and the MBTA Green Line D branch runs through Newton.
