Lynn is a coastal city of about 100,000 people on Massachusetts Bay, about 10 miles north of Boston. Once called the Shoe City, it was one of the world's great shoe-making centers in the 1800s, and its Victorian downtown, grand churches and mill buildings still reflect that era. Today it is one of the most diverse cities in Massachusetts, with a lively Latino, Cambodian and African community.
Lynn Woods Reservation, one of the largest city parks in the country, covers more than 2,000 acres of forest, ponds and rocky trails, and the stone Stone Tower and High Rock Tower offer views out to Boston and the sea. Lynn Heritage State Park, on the waterfront, tells the story of the shoe industry and has a harborwalk.
The Lynn Shore Reservation follows a long sandy beach and seawall toward Nahant, Red Rocks Park offers rocky ocean views, and the Northern Strand Community Trail runs west on an old rail line. Downtown's Central Square, the Diamond Historic District with its Victorian homes, and the classic Capitol Diner are worth a look.
Large city-owned forest of about 2,200 acres with ponds, rocky hills and many miles of trails and fire roads. It is one of the largest municipal parks in the country. Climb to the Stone Tower for views, bring a trail map, and wear sturdy shoes for the rocky paths.
Cave in Lynn Woods tied to a legend of pirate treasure, where a spiritualist family spent years in the 1800s tunneling into the rock to find it. Visitors can walk down into the tunnel on open days. Bring a flashlight and check opening times, as the gate is closed much of the year.
Small oceanfront park on Lynn Shore Drive with rocky outcrops, benches and wide views over Nahant Bay and the Atlantic. It is popular for sunrise watching and quiet sea views. Climb the rocks carefully, as they can be slippery, and bring a camera for the morning light.
Rail trail on a former railroad line that runs from Everett through Malden, Revere and Saugus into Lynn, ending near the waterfront. It is paved and popular with cyclists and walkers. Ride it from Lynn toward Saugus to see marshes, and use bike lights near dusk.
State reservation along Lynn Shore Drive with King's Beach, a seawall promenade and views across Nahant Bay. It is great for walks and ocean breezes. Check water quality notices before swimming at King's Beach, and walk the promenade toward Nahant at sunset.
Stone tower built in 1905 on a rocky hill above downtown Lynn, with a park around it and views over the city to the ocean. An observatory nearby offers telescope viewing on some evenings. Climb to the park for the view, and check for public observing nights.
Waterfront state park on Lynn Harbor with a long harborwalk, lawns and a marina, created to celebrate the city's industrial past, especially shoemaking. It is a pleasant place for a stroll by the water. Walk the harbor path at sunset and look for interpretive signs about local industry.
Local history museum downtown with exhibits on Lynn's shoe industry, early electrical firms and community life, plus the LynnArts gallery space. It is a good introduction to the city. Check opening hours, and combine it with a walk to see nearby downtown murals.
Collection of large outdoor murals painted on downtown buildings by local and international artists as part of a festival that began in 2017, plus neon lights under railroad bridges. It changed the look of downtown. Walk around Central Square with a map to see the main works.
Residential neighborhood near Lynn Common and the ocean with grand Victorian houses built by shoe manufacturers and merchants in the late 1800s. It has many fine examples of Queen Anne and other styles. Walk the streets, and remember the homes are private.
Busy heart of downtown Lynn around the commuter rail station, with shops, restaurants from many cultures and colorful street murals. It is the base for exploring the downtown arts district. Arrive by train from Boston, and try one of the local Latin American or Asian restaurants.
Classic lunch car diner built in the late 1920s and run by the same family for generations, serving breakfast and simple diner meals at a counter. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Go early for breakfast, as seats are few and it closes in the early afternoon.
