Everett is a compact city of about 49,000 people just north of Boston, on the banks of the Mystic River. Settled as part of Charlestown and later Malden, it became its own town in 1870 and a city in 1892, and for much of its history it was an industrial center with chemical works, rail yards and factories along the river.
Today Everett is best known for Encore Boston Harbor, the luxury resort and casino built on a cleaned-up industrial site on the Mystic River, with a public harborwalk, gardens and water shuttles to Boston. The waterfront path links to new riverside parks, and the city has a lively food scene with Brazilian, Salvadoran and Italian cooking, plus the original Night Shift Brewing taproom.
Everett also has quieter corners, including historic Woodlawn Cemetery, a 19th-century garden cemetery, and the Gateway Center shopping area beside the river. Boston's downtown is only a few miles away by bus, train or ferry.
A large luxury resort and casino on the Mystic River, opened in 2019, with gaming floors, restaurants, bars, a spa and a hotel tower. Even non-gamblers come to see the floral displays and art in the lobby. Visitors must be 21 to enter the casino floor; water shuttles run to downtown Boston.
A public waterfront walkway and garden along the Mystic River in front of the Encore resort, with benches, lawns, a gazebo and views of the Boston skyline. It is free and open to everyone, not only hotel guests. Sunset is a good time to come, and it links to other riverside paths nearby.
A riverside park built on former industrial land along the Mystic River, with a walking path, lawns, a boat launch and views across the water to Somerville and Charlestown. It is part of an effort to reconnect Everett with its river. Bring a picnic or launch a kayak on calm days.
The flagship taproom of Night Shift Brewing, a craft brewery founded in Everett in 2012, set in a warehouse with a big beer hall, a long tap list and a seasonal outdoor area. It is popular for hazy IPAs and sour beers. Food trucks or snacks are usually available; expect crowds on weekend evenings.
A large garden cemetery founded in 1850, with winding lanes, mature trees, hills and many elaborate Victorian monuments. Several notable Bostonians are buried here, and the quiet grounds are good for a reflective walk. Please be respectful of funerals and visitors, and keep to the roads and paths.
A large shopping center on Route 16 by the Mystic River, built on former industrial land, with big-box stores, discount retailers, a warehouse club and casual restaurants. It is the main place for practical shopping in Everett. Parking is plentiful, and it sits a short drive or bus ride from Encore Boston Harbor.
A prominent Catholic church on Broadway, the city's main street, with a tall brick facade and a long history serving Everett's Irish, Italian and later Latin American communities. Visitors are welcome outside of services. Look at the stained glass, then explore Everett Square's shops and cafes nearby.
The historic heart of Everett around Broadway and Norwood Street, with City Hall, small shops, bakeries and restaurants serving Brazilian, Salvadoran, Haitian and Italian food. It is a good place to sample the city's immigrant cooking at modest prices. Buses from Boston and the Orange Line stop nearby.
