About Woburn

Woburn is a city of about 40,000 people in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, around 10 miles north of Boston at the junction of Interstate 93 and Route 128. Settled in 1640, it became a farming town and later a leather tanning center in the 1800s, and today it is a busy suburb with offices, hotels and shopping close to Boston.

Woburn has a rich historical side. Benjamin Thompson, the scientist known as Count Rumford, was born here, and his birthplace is preserved as a small museum. The Woburn Public Library, designed by the famous architect H. H. Richardson, is one of the finest library buildings in the country, and the First Burial Ground holds graves from the town's earliest decades. The Baldwin House recalls Loammi Baldwin, the engineer behind the Middlesex Canal.

For outdoor time, Horn Pond and Horn Pond Mountain offer lakeside walks and views over the city, and the Tri-Community Greenway links Woburn with Winchester and Stoneham. Boston, Lexington and Concord are all within a short drive.

Best seasonMay to October, with fall foliage around Horn Pond in October.
Ideal stayHalf a day for the sights, or longer as a hotel base for Boston.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 20 minutes away; the Anderson/Woburn station has commuter rail, Amtrak Downeaster and Logan Express buses.
