About East Boston

East Boston is a waterfront neighborhood of Boston, across the harbor from downtown and home to Logan International Airport. It was created in the 1830s by joining several harbor islands with landfill, and in the 19th century its shipyards were world famous: Donald McKay built some of the fastest clipper ships ever launched here, including the Flying Cloud.

For generations East Boston, or Eastie, has been a gateway for immigrants, first Irish and Italian families and today many from Central and South America, which gives it one of the most varied food scenes in the city, from Santarpio's old-school pizza to Salvadoran and Colombian cafes around Maverick Square. The waterfront has been transformed with parks such as Piers Park and LoPresti Park, which offer some of the best skyline views in Boston.

Further north, the East Boston Greenway leads through Bremen Street Park toward Constitution Beach, the hilltop Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine overlooks Orient Heights, and Belle Isle Marsh protects the last remaining salt marsh in Boston.

Best seasonMay to October for waterfront parks, the beach and skyline views.
Ideal stayA half day to a day, easily combined with a stay in Boston or a flight from Logan.
ArrivingThe MBTA Blue Line runs under the harbor from downtown Boston to Maverick in a few minutes; Logan Airport is right next door.
