About Haverhill

Haverhill is a city of about 67,000 people on the Merrimack River in northeastern Massachusetts, near the New Hampshire border. Founded by English settlers in 1640, it became one of the leading shoe manufacturing centers in the world in the 1800s, earning the nickname "Queen Slipper City," and many of its big brick factories still line the river.

The downtown along Washington Street and the riverfront has restored shoe factories turned into lofts, restaurants and shops, and a boardwalk follows the Merrimack. The John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace, the 1688 farmhouse where the famous poet grew up, is preserved as a museum, and the Buttonwoods Museum covers local history.

Winnekenni Park has a castle, walking trails and Kenoza Lake, and the Merrimack River offers views and paddling. Rowland Hussey Macy opened one of his first stores here before founding Macy's in New York, and the commuter rail connects it directly to Boston.

Best seasonMay to October for river walks, parks and outdoor dining.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the Whittier Birthplace, Winnekenni Park and the riverfront.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 45 minutes south; MBTA commuter rail runs to Boston.
