Framingham is a city in the MetroWest region of Massachusetts, about 20 miles west of Boston. Settled in the 1600s as a farming town, it grew into an industrial and railroad center with carpet mills at Saxonville and factories near the depot, and later into a major retail and business hub along Route 9. It became a city in 2018 after more than 300 years as a town.
The historic Framingham Centre Common is surrounded by churches, the old Village Hall and the Edgell Memorial Library, home of the Framingham History Center. Framingham State University hosts the Danforth Art Museum and the Christa McAuliffe Center, a planetarium named for the teacher-astronaut who studied there. The 19th-century mill buildings of Saxonville recall the town's industrial past.
Nature lovers visit Garden in the Woods, a renowned native plant garden, and walk the trails of Callahan State Park and the grounds of Cushing Memorial Park. Shoppers World and the Route 9 corridor are among the busiest shopping areas in New England.
The botanical garden of the Native Plant Trust, with winding woodland paths through collections of native wildflowers, ferns, shrubs and trees from across New England. Spring wildflowers peak from April to early June. Buy tickets ahead, check the open season and join a guided walk if you can.
The historic heart of old Framingham, a green common surrounded by 19th-century churches, the old Village Hall and the Edgell Memorial Library, with war memorials and shade trees. It is a pretty place for a short stroll and photos. Look for seasonal events and a farmers market on the common.
A cluster of large brick mill buildings along the Sudbury River in the Saxonville neighborhood, once home to major carpet and woolen mills and now used by small businesses and artists. Walk by the falls and the old mill complex to see Framingham's industrial past. The area is quiet and best seen on foot.
The city's history museum, based in the Edgell Memorial Library on the Centre Common, with exhibits on Framingham's people, industry and role in American history, plus walking tours and programs. Check the open hours before visiting, and pair it with a walk around the common.
An art museum and school at Framingham State University focused on American and New England art from the 19th century to today, with changing exhibitions and a permanent collection. It is compact and easy to see in an hour or two. Check the website for opening days and current shows.
A science learning center and planetarium at Framingham State University, named for Christa McAuliffe, the teacher chosen for the 1986 Challenger flight who graduated from the college. Public planetarium shows and space programs run on set dates. Book tickets ahead for family shows.
A state park on the Framingham and Marlborough border with miles of trails through woods, fields and around ponds, and hilltop views from Gibbs Mountain. It is popular with hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and dog walkers. Parking lots fill on nice weekends, so arrive early.
A park on the grounds of a former military hospital, with walking paths, a pond, gardens, a chapel and veterans memorials set among old trees. It is a calm place for a walk, picnic or quiet reflection. The chapel is used for events, and the park hosts community concerts in summer.
A large open-air shopping center on Route 9, on the site of one of the first suburban shopping centers in the United States, with big-box stores, chain restaurants and services. It anchors a wider shopping area known as the Golden Triangle. Visit on weekdays to avoid heavy Route 9 traffic.
