About Milton

Milton sits on the southern edge of Boston, but much of it feels like countryside: the town holds a large share of the Blue Hills Reservation, whose granite summit, Great Blue Hill, is the highest point on the coast between Maine and Florida. Settled in the 1640s and incorporated in 1662, Milton was a seat of colonial gentry and later of China-trade merchants, and President George H. W. Bush was born here in 1924.

The top of Great Blue Hill holds the Blue Hill Observatory, which has kept weather records since 1885, beside the stone Eliot Tower lookout. Below, Houghton's Pond draws summer swimmers, and the Mass Audubon Trailside Museum shows native wildlife. Historic houses open to visitors include the Forbes House Museum and the Victorian Eustis Estate.

Along the Neponset River, vintage PCC streetcars of the Mattapan trolley line still rattle through Milton's stations, and Milton Village faces Dorchester's Lower Mills across the falls. Downtown Boston is only about 20 minutes away by car or trolley and Red Line.

Best seasonMay to October for hiking and swimming; late October for fall color from Great Blue Hill.
Ideal stayA day, or a half-day add-on to a Boston trip.
ArrivingTake the Red Line to Ashmont and the Mattapan trolley into Milton, or drive about 20 minutes from Boston Logan via I-93.
