About North Port

North Port is a fast-growing city in southern Sarasota County on Florida's Gulf Coast, between Venice and Port Charlotte. Founded in 1959 by the General Development Corporation as a planned retirement and residential community, it has grown into one of the largest cities in the county by area, with miles of canals, woods and preserved land.

The city's most famous landmark is Warm Mineral Springs, a deep natural sinkhole lake fed by warm, mineral-rich water that stays around 85 degrees all year. Scientists have found prehistoric human remains and artifacts in its depths, and today visitors come to float and swim. Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park and the Garden of the Five Senses offer quieter nature walks.

In the newer West Villages area, Wellen Park has a walkable downtown on a lake and CoolToday Park, the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves. North Port is also a handy base for the beaches of Venice and Englewood and for Myakka River State Park to the north.

Best seasonNovember to April for mild, dry weather and spring training in February and March.
Ideal stayOne to two days, combined with Venice or the Gulf beaches.
ArrivingSarasota Bradenton and Punta Gorda airports are each about 35 to 45 minutes away; I-75 runs through the city.
