About Freeport

Freeport is a village of about 44,000 people on the South Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, about 25 miles east of Manhattan. Settled in the 17th century as Raynor South, it became a busy port where ship captains avoided customs fees, giving rise to the name Freeport. In the early 20th century it was a lively resort and theater town, and bandleader Guy Lombardo, famous for New Year's Eve broadcasts, lived and kept boats here.

Today Freeport is best known for the Nautical Mile along Woodcleft Avenue, a waterfront strip of seafood restaurants, bars, fish markets and charter fishing boats that comes alive in summer. The village is laced with canals and marinas, and the Freeport Historical Society Museum tells the story of its maritime past.

Nature lovers can explore the salt marshes of Cow Meadow Park and Preserve, and the bay leads out to the barrier beaches, with Jones Beach State Park a short drive away. Frequent Long Island Rail Road trains make Freeport an easy trip from New York City.

Best seasonMay to September for the Nautical Mile, fishing and beaches.
Ideal stayA half day to a day, with an evening seafood dinner on the water.
ArrivingThe Long Island Rail Road Babylon Branch reaches Freeport from Penn Station in about 45 minutes; JFK Airport is about 30 minutes away.
