About Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat lies on the South Saskatchewan River in southeastern Alberta, in some of the sunniest and driest country on the Canadian prairies. Large natural gas reserves gave it the nickname Gas City, and its early economy also leaned heavily on clay, which supported a large pottery and brick-making industry. The river valley and coulees create a surprisingly green setting.

The Saamis Tepee, a massive steel structure originally built for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, stands beside the Trans-Canada Highway on the edge of a coulee. Downtown, St. Patrick's Church is a Gothic Revival landmark, and the Esplanade houses an art gallery, museum and theater. Medalta Potteries and the historic clay district preserve kilns and factory buildings where everyday ceramics were once made. Small touches such as gas lamps and a giant chess set add character to the core, and the railway depot and river memorial reflect the city's transport roots. Police Point Park and Strathcona Island Park offer riverside walking and birdwatching among cottonwoods.

Road-trippers on the Trans-Canada often stop here, and the city rewards anyone curious about industrial heritage. Echodale Regional Park offers a farm and lake on the river, and Kin Coulee Park adds trails and picnic areas. Summers are hot and dry, and chinook winds sometimes break up the winter cold.

Best seasonMay through September for warm, sunny weather and riverside parks at their best.
Ideal stayOne to two days to see the clay district, downtown and the river parks.
ArrivingMost travelers arrive by road on the Trans-Canada Highway; a regional airport has limited flights.
