Meridian is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, a community of about 130,000 people just west of Boise in Idaho's Treasure Valley. It began in the 1890s as a small farming and dairy town along the railroad, and its name comes from the Boise Meridian survey line that runs nearby. Fields have given way to neighborhoods, but Old Town Meridian keeps its historic brick buildings and small-town feel.
A historic walking tour leads past landmarks such as the Idaho Building, the Heritage Building and early homes like the Baird House, and local favorites such as Sunrise Cafe and Hungry Onion Burgers keep downtown busy. The Meridian Idaho Temple, with its gardens, is a striking sight on the north side of town, and the Scentsy campus is known for its glass tower and holiday light displays.
Families head to Roaring Springs Water Park and the Wahooz Family Fun Zone, and The Village at Meridian has shopping, dining and a musical fountain show. Settlers Park and Kleiner Park offer lawns, ponds and events, and the Boise River Greenbelt and the foothills are a short drive away.
Historic downtown of Meridian along Main Street and Idaho Avenue, with older storefronts, local restaurants, coffee shops and the City Hall plaza that hosts summer events. It feels like a small town center. Check the city calendar for concerts and markets, and stroll Main Street for lunch.
Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated in 2017, a large white building with a tall spire and landscaped grounds. Visitors can walk the gardens, though entry inside is only for members. It is especially pretty in the evening when the building is lit.
Corporate headquarters of the home fragrance company Scentsy, with landscaped commons, fountains and paths open to the public. It is famous for its large holiday light display, which draws crowds in December. Visit in the holiday season after dark, and dress warmly for the walk.
Idaho's largest water park, with big water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and play areas for small kids. It is a top summer outing for families from across the Treasure Valley. Arrive at opening to claim shade, and bring sunscreen, as the sun is strong in summer.
Family entertainment center next to Roaring Springs with go-karts, mini golf, laser tag, bumper boats, an arcade and food. It works well on any day of the year since many attractions are indoors. Buy a combo pass to save money, and visit on a weekday to avoid lines.
Open-air shopping and dining center with stores, restaurants, a movie theater and a central fountain that puts on music and light shows. It is a popular evening hangout. Come after dark to watch the fountain show, and check for seasonal events like holiday lights.
One of Meridian's largest parks, with a big playground, a splash pad, sports fields, walking paths and ponds. It is a favorite with young families in summer. Bring swimsuits for the splash pad, and pack a picnic for the shaded tables.
City park near The Village at Meridian with a pond, walking paths, a playground and an amphitheater that hosts summer concerts and movies. It is a pleasant spot for an evening walk. Check the city schedule for free concerts, and bring a blanket for the lawn.
Long-running short track oval in Meridian that hosts stock car races and other motorsport events on summer weekends. It has a loyal local following and a family-friendly feel. Bring ear protection for kids, and check the race schedule before you go.
Annual community festival held in June that celebrates Meridian's dairy farming roots, with a parade, carnival rides, live music, food vendors and agricultural activities. It has been a tradition for many decades. Arrive early for parade spots, and bring cash for vendors.
