About Huntsville

Huntsville is a fast-growing city in northern Alabama, set in the Tennessee Valley at the foot of the wooded Monte Sano and the southern edge of the Appalachian Plateau. It was founded in 1805 by John Hunt, who built a cabin near a big limestone spring that still flows in the heart of downtown, and in 1819 it hosted the convention that wrote Alabama's first constitution. For more than a century Huntsville was a quiet cotton town and a center of textile mills.

Everything changed after World War II, when the Army brought Wernher von Braun and his team of rocket scientists to Redstone Arsenal in 1950. Their work produced the Saturn V rocket that carried astronauts to the Moon, and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center still develops rockets here, earning Huntsville the name Rocket City. Today it has about 225,000 residents, making it the largest city in Alabama, and a booming economy built on aerospace, defense, research and technology.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp, is the city's star attraction, with a real Saturn V rocket displayed in a vast hall and a towering replica outside. Downtown, Big Spring Park surrounds the spring where the city began, and the Twickenham Historic District has one of the largest concentrations of antebellum homes in Alabama, including the restored Weeden House. Visitors can also explore the Huntsville Botanical Garden, the Constitution Hall Park living history museum, the Lowe Mill arts center, one of the largest privately owned arts facilities in the country, and hike the trails of Monte Sano State Park.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November for mild weather, blooming gardens and fall color; summers are hot and humid.
Ideal stayTwo days for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Big Spring Park, the Twickenham district, the Botanical Garden and Monte Sano.
ArrivingHuntsville International Airport is about 15 minutes west of downtown, and Interstate 565 connects the city to Interstate 65.
