Stillwater is a college town in north-central Oklahoma, about an hour northeast of Oklahoma City, founded in the Land Run of 1889 and now home to Oklahoma State University. The orange-clad Cowboys dominate local life, especially on fall football weekends, and the city is also known as a birthplace of the Red Dirt music scene.
OSU's red-brick Georgian campus is the main attraction, with Boone Pickens Stadium, the historic Gallagher-Iba Arena, the Edmon Low Library and peaceful Theta Pond. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame celebrates the sport the university has long dominated, and the OSU Museum of Art occupies a restored former post office downtown. The Botanic Garden at OSU and the Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History round out a visit.
Downtown Stillwater has historic brick buildings, shops and cafes, while Washington Street, known as the Strip, is the lively student bar district. Eskimo Joe's is a local institution, and Boomer Lake and Lake Carl Blackwell offer trails, fishing and sunsets.
A handsome campus of red-brick Georgian buildings, including the Edmon Low Library and the Student Union, one of the largest in the country. Stroll past Theta Pond and Library Lawn, and shop for orange gear at the Union. Visitor parking is available near the Student Union; weekends are quieter.
Home of the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team, a modern stadium on the edge of campus where tens of thousands of fans in orange pack the stands on fall Saturdays. Game days bring tailgating, the Spirit Rider on horseback and big crowds. Book lodging well ahead for home games.
Oklahoma State's historic basketball and wrestling arena, nicknamed the Madison Square Garden of the Plains, known for its loud, close-to-the-court atmosphere. Catch a Cowboys basketball game or a wrestling dual meet in winter. Tickets for wrestling against top rivals sell out quickly.
A museum honoring the history of amateur wrestling in America, with plaques of honored wrestlers and coaches, Olympic medals, memorabilia and exhibits on Oklahoma State's long run of national titles. It sits right by the OSU campus. Allow about an hour; fans of the sport could spend longer.
A local history museum in a historic former church building near downtown, telling the story of Stillwater from the Land Run of 1889 through the growth of the town and university. Exhibits include photographs, clothing and everyday objects. Admission is free; check the limited opening days first.
OSU's art museum in the restored Postal Plaza, a historic former post office in downtown Stillwater. It shows rotating exhibitions drawn from the university's collection and visiting shows, from Native American art to contemporary work. Admission is free, and it pairs well with a downtown stroll.
A large public garden west of campus with themed display gardens, plant trial beds, water features and the set used for a long-running Oklahoma gardening television show. Paths are easy to walk, and it is free to visit. Spring and early summer are best; bring water on hot days.
A Stillwater institution opened in 1975 near campus, famous for its cheese fries, burgers and the cartoon of Joe and his dog Buffy printed on souvenir T-shirts sold around the world. Expect a lively, packed room on game days. Visit the shop next door for a classic shirt.
Known locally as the Strip, this stretch of Washington Street next to campus is packed with bars, live music venues and late-night eateries popular with students. It is a key spot in Stillwater's Red Dirt music history. It is busiest on game days and weekend nights; walk or take a ride home.
Stillwater's historic downtown along Main Street, with early 20th-century brick buildings such as the Lytton Building, plus local shops, coffee houses, restaurants and the courthouse square. It hosts car shows, parades and events through the year. Park once and explore on foot.
A city lake on the north side of Stillwater with a trail of about three miles around the shore, picnic areas, fishing docks and a disc golf course. It is great for a morning jog or a sunset walk, and birdwatchers can spot herons and waterfowl. Parking is available at several points around the lake.
A large lake owned by Oklahoma State University about ten miles west of town, surrounded by woods and prairie, with campsites, boat ramps, swimming areas and fishing for bass and catfish. A modest entry permit is required. It is a peaceful escape on weekends, especially in spring and fall.
