About Enid

Enid is a city of about 50,000 people in north-central Oklahoma, the seat of Garfield County. It was born in a single day during the Cherokee Outlet Land Run of September 16, 1893, when thousands of settlers raced to claim land. Surrounded by wheat fields, it became a major grain center, and its huge elevators give it one of the largest grain storage capacities in the country, earning it the nickname Queen Wheat City.

The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center tells the story of the land run and includes Humphrey Heritage Village, with an original land office, church and schoolhouse. Downtown has been revitalized around the Garfield County Courthouse, the Stride Bank Center arena, the restored Enid Symphony Center and the Gaslight Theatre. Families enjoy Leonardo's Children's Museum and its large outdoor play castle.

The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma recalls Enid's role as a rail hub, and Vance Air Force Base trains military pilots just south of town. Enid is a good stop on a drive across the plains between Oklahoma City and Kansas.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October, avoiding the hottest summer weeks.
Ideal stayOne to two days.
ArrivingWill Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City is about 90 minutes south; Enid Woodring Regional Airport has limited flights, and US 412 and US 81 cross the city.
