In the middle of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, Mount Pleasant combines a busy university, a living Indigenous culture and an old-fashioned downtown. It is the seat of Isabella County and home of Central Michigan University, whose students roughly double the population of about 21,000 during the school year. The city sits beside the Chippewa River and the Isabella Indian Reservation of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
The Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways tells the history of the Great Lakes Anishinabek in their own voices, and the nearby site of the former Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School is a sobering reminder of that past. The tribe's Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is one of the largest in the Midwest, with a concert venue and an indoor waterpark hotel. Downtown has restored brick blocks, local restaurants and the 1920s Broadway Theatre.
Outdoors, riverside parks and Deerfield Nature Park offer trails, swinging bridges and paddling on the Chippewa. CMU adds a museum and college sports, and Midland and the Saginaw Bay shore are about an hour east.
A museum and cultural center run by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, telling the story of the Anishinabek of the Great Lakes through artifacts, immersive exhibits and contemporary art. The permanent exhibit is moving and very well done. Allow two hours, and visit the gift shop for Native-made crafts.
A university museum with exhibits on Michigan wildlife, fossils and geology, Native American history and pioneer life, plus rotating displays. It is free and compact, making a good hour-long stop on a campus walk. Check opening hours, which follow the academic calendar.
The grounds and remaining buildings of a federal boarding school that operated from 1893 to 1934, where Native children were separated from their families and cultures. The tribe leads efforts to remember those who attended. Approach it as a place of reflection, and learn more first at the Ziibiwing Center.
One of the largest casino resorts in the Midwest, owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, with gaming floors, several restaurants, a spa and an arena that hosts well-known touring acts. A summer outdoor amphitheater adds big concerts. Book shows early, as headline dates sell out quickly.
A family hotel with a large indoor waterpark open year-round, featuring slides, a lazy river, a wave-style pool and splash areas for toddlers. Hotel guests get waterpark access, and day passes are sometimes sold. It is a favorite winter escape, so reserve weekends and school holidays well ahead.
A large, green campus founded in 1892 as a teachers' school, with brick academic halls, open quads, the Clarke Historical Library and Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Fall football Saturdays fill the town with maroon and gold. Visitors can walk freely; park in visitor lots and check the events calendar.
A restored historic theatre on Broadway Street downtown, now a community venue for films, concerts, plays and comedy run in partnership with the university. The vintage marquee is a local landmark. See what is on during your stay, and combine a show with dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.
A walkable district of late 1800s and early 1900s brick buildings along Main and Broadway streets, with independent shops, coffeehouses, pubs and restaurants. Summer brings farmers markets and street events. Park once and explore on foot, then cross to the riverside parks a few blocks east.
A large county park just west of town along the Chippewa River, with several miles of wooded trails, two swinging suspension bridges, an island, campsites and canoe access. It is beautiful in autumn color. Wear sturdy shoes, as some paths are muddy after rain, and bring bug spray in summer.
A city park of mature woods and ravines along Mission Creek, with walking trails, picnic spots and a children's play area. It feels surprisingly wild for being inside the city and is popular for quiet strolls and birdwatching. Trails are short, so pair a visit with a downtown coffee stop.
A city park set on an island in the Chippewa River near downtown, with ball fields, picnic pavilions, a fishing area and riverside paths that link to the city's trail network. Canoe and kayak trips often pass by. It is a pleasant spot for a picnic lunch or an evening walk by the water.
