About Elyria

Elyria is a city of about 53,000 people and the county seat of Lorain County in northern Ohio, about 25 miles southwest of Cleveland. Founded in 1817 by Heman Ely, it grew up where the east and west branches of the Black River meet, and the river's waterfalls once powered its early mills.

The city's historic center is Ely Square, a green surrounded by the old Lorain County Courthouse, churches and Victorian commercial blocks along Broad Street. Elyria is also known as the birthplace of the Easter Seals movement, founded here in 1919 by businessman Edgar Allen. The Hickories Museum, the grand home of industrialist and bicycle-seat inventor Arthur Garford, shows how the city's leading families lived a century ago.

The best of Elyria is outdoors. Cascade Park hides two waterfalls and sandstone cliffs in a gorge right next to downtown, and the Stocker Arts Center at Lorain County Community College brings concerts and touring shows. Carlisle Reservation, the Lorain County Metro Parks headquarters, lies just to the south, and the Lake Erie shore at Lorain is about 15 minutes away.

Best seasonLate spring through fall, when the waterfalls and river trails are at their best; October brings fall color.
Ideal stayOne day, or a half day as a side trip from Cleveland.
ArrivingCleveland Hopkins Airport is about 25 minutes east; Elyria has an Amtrak station and sits off the Ohio Turnpike and I-90.
