Flags line the streets of Findlay all year, and Congress backed its claim to the title Flag City, USA in 1974. The seat of Hancock County sits on the Blanchard River in northwest Ohio, about 45 miles south of Toledo, and it feels larger than its 40,000 residents thanks to a busy downtown and a strong arts scene.
The town boomed in the 1880s when natural gas was struck beneath it, drawing glassworks and grand homes; the Hancock Historical Museum still tells that story. Today Marathon Petroleum keeps its headquarters here, and the University of Findlay adds students and the remarkable Mazza Museum, devoted to original art from children's picture books.
Main Street is a long run of restored brick blocks with cafes, the domed county courthouse and the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts. Dorney Plaza opens the town to the river, and the Hancock Park District protects quiet woods such as Oakwoods and Litzenberg just outside town.
Completed in 1888 during the gas boom, this stone courthouse anchors Main Street with a tall clock dome and ornate carved details. The interior has a grand staircase and decorative ironwork. Walk around the square in the evening, when the building is lit and the flags along the street catch the light.
A landscaped plaza where Main Street meets the Blanchard River, with seating, a stage area and steps toward the water. Summer brings concerts, festivals and farmers markets here. It is a pleasant stop for a coffee break during a downtown stroll, and the bridge nearby gives good views along the river.
On the University of Findlay campus, the Mazza holds thousands of original illustrations from children's books, from classic Caldecott winners to modern favorites. Galleries change through the year and there is a reading area for kids. Admission is free; check the schedule, as hours follow the academic calendar.
A small campus of historic buildings tells the story of Hancock County, from pioneer log cabins and a red barn to the Victorian house at its heart. Exhibits cover the 1880s natural gas boom and the glass made in Findlay during those years. Allow about an hour and ask the volunteers for stories.
This modern performing arts center on Main Street hosts the Findlay-area symphony, touring musicians, comedy and community theater in a comfortable hall with good acoustics. The glassy lobby looks out on downtown. Check the calendar before your trip and pair a show with dinner at a nearby restaurant.
Main Street runs for several blocks past restored Victorian commercial buildings such as the Blackford Building, filled with local shops, bakeries, bars and diners. Flags hang from the lampposts year round. Park once and walk the length of the street, then cut down to the river at Dorney Plaza.
Findlay's long-time city park stretches along the Blanchard River west of downtown, with shaded picnic shelters, playgrounds, sports fields and a public swimming pool open in summer. Paths follow the riverbank, where geese gather. It is an easy place to let kids run between museum visits.
Southeast of the city, the large upland reservoirs that supply Findlay's water double as a recreation area. A paved path along the top of the embankment is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists, and anglers fish for walleye and perch. Bring a windbreaker, as it is often breezy on the dike.
Managed by the Hancock Park District, Oakwoods mixes mature woodland, restored prairie and ponds on the edge of town. Trails loop past wetlands and wildflower meadows, and the nature center has exhibits and live animals. Weekday mornings are quiet and good for birdwatching.
A park district preserve east of Findlay along the Blanchard River, with mature woods, open meadows and trails for walking and cross-country skiing. Picnic shelters sit near the parking areas, and the river bottoms are lovely in autumn color. Paths can be muddy after rain, so wear sturdy shoes.
